The magnificent Osum Canyon (Kanionet e Osumit) is the largest in Albania, often referred to as Albania’s Grand Canyon.

This awe-inspiring natural wonder is celebrated for its stunning landscapes and unique geological features.

Carved over thousands of years by the Osum River, the canyon stretches 13 kilometers and reaches depths of up to 80 meters in certain areas. The canyon is adorned with lush greenery, towering cliffs, and picturesque waterfalls, making it a popular day-trip destination from Berat.

For water sports enthusiasts, exploring the canyon is a must. The best time to visit is in the spring when the Osum River is at its fullest, and the tributaries create spectacular waterfalls as they flow into the gorge. Several agencies, including Albanian Rafting Group, offer rafting trips through the canyon. No prior whitewater experience is required, and the trips are suitable for participants of all ages, including children.

If you visit during the summer when water levels are low and the river is unnavigable, local guides offer hiking tours along the riverbed. In just two to three hours, you can explore the canyon’s three most beautiful stretches, swim in natural pools, and even take a thrilling leap from a cliff into the deep water below. A scenic trail runs along the left bank of the canyon, from Blazënckë Bridge to Çorovodë (9 km), providing several stunning viewpoints along the way.

On the right bank, an asphalt road offers breathtaking views of the canyon. Several lookout points are available, with the best views at Blazënckë Bridge and a viewing platform called Bride’s Hole. For a truly romantic experience, visit the Zabërzan footbridge, where a picturesque path winds beneath cliffs on both sides of the canyon.

The Osum Canyon is part of the larger Skrapar region, with it's administrative center, Çorovodë, located about 50 km southeast of Berat. This makes the canyon an excellent day-trip destination from the UNESCO-listed city. Çorovodë is accessible by car or bus, with regular services running several times daily from Berat.

WARNING: Avoid the road from Çorovodë to Këlcyrë in Vjosa Valley via Sevran unless you're driving a high-clearance vehicle. The road is in poor condition and can easily damage your car or leave you stranded.

In addition to the Osum Canyon, Skrapar boasts several other natural attractions, including Pirogosh Cave and Bogova Waterfall. For those planning to stay overnight, accommodation is available in Çorovodë, with the Bracaj Guesthouse being the best option. Guests can enjoy stunning views of the canyon and delicious meals prepared with fresh local ingredients!
