Are you ready for an unforgettable adventure in the Swiss Alps? We’re about to take you to Glacier Paradise near Zermatt, a stunning destination with unbeatable views of the Matterhorn and surrounding peaks.
At an elevation of 3,883 meters, Glacier Paradise is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Switzerland, especially nature lovers and adventure seekers.
In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know, from ticket prices and opening hours to the best time to visit, transportation options, and insider tips.
Reaching Glacier Paradise is easy, thanks to Zermatt’s well-connected transport system. We start by traveling to Zermatt, a picturesque town located in the Swiss Alps. Here are the main ways to get there:
By Train: Zermatt is car-free, so the best way to get there is by train. You can take the Zermatt Railway from major Swiss cities like Geneva or Zurich. The scenic train ride through the Swiss countryside is an attraction in itself, and it’s well worth the journey.
By Bus: From Zermatt’s train station, it’s about a 18-minute walk (1.4 kilometers) to the Glacier Paradise cable car station. If you prefer not to walk, you can take the bus number 571 to Zermatt, ZenStecken station, then walk across a bridge and take the elevator up to the cable car station.
Once we’re at the cable car station, we board a small cable car (similar in size to the Maokong cable car in Taiwan), which can carry about six passengers. This cable car will take us on a journey with several stops before we reach Glacier Paradise.
Tickets to Glacier Paradise are reasonably priced, especially if we take advantage of discounts available with Swiss Travel Passes or Half Fare Cards. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the ticket prices in USD:
Full Price (Adult): $120 USD
Children (9-16 years): $60 USD (half price)
With Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card, or GA Card: $60 USD
Children (under 9 years): Free (note that it’s not recommended for children under 3 years to go to Glacier Paradise)
Ticket prices can be purchased in advance through the official website, at the ticket counter, or from a self-service kiosk. Although the self-service kiosks are convenient, we found that the interface can be a bit tricky, so it’s a good idea to take your time. Tickets are valid for ten days, offering flexibility if you want to return later.
Glacier Paradise is open year-round, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience:
Summer (June-August): The weather is generally milder, and it’s perfect for enjoying the stunning views of the Alps and glaciers. It’s a great time to hike and explore the surrounding areas.
Winter (December-March): For winter sports enthusiasts, visiting during the winter months is ideal, especially for skiing or snowboarding.
Opening Hours:
Cable Car Operating Hours: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (subject to weather conditions)
Glacier Paradise Viewing Platform: Open from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, with the last entry at 3:45 PM. It’s important to arrive early, especially if you want to beat the crowds.

Once we arrive at Glacier Paradise, the view is nothing short of spectacular. The observation deck offers 360-degree views of 38 peaks that rise above 4,000 meters, including the famous Matterhorn. From here, we can also see 14 glaciers, with the most prominent being the Matterhorn Glacier. It’s a perfect spot for photos or simply soaking in the breathtaking scenery.
Here are a few highlights of what you can do:
Glacier Viewpoint: The viewing platform provides the best vantage point to marvel at the Alps and glaciers. The clear skies and crisp air make this an unforgettable experience.
Ice Palace: Inside Glacier Paradise, there’s an ice cave, which showcases intricate ice sculptures and tunnels. It's a fun experience, especially for families and kids.
Matterhorn Museum: Learn about the history of the Matterhorn, including the story of its first ascent in 1865, and the tragic climbing accident that led to its worldwide fame.
Tip: Wear warm clothing and sturdy shoes, as the ground can be icy, especially in winter. Bring a camera with a good zoom lens to capture the peaks and glaciers in all their glory.
If you're an adventurer, Glacier Paradise is also a starting point for various hiking and skiing routes. One of the most famous trails is the Gornergrat, which offers amazing views of the Matterhorn. In winter, the area turns into a skiing paradise, with several slopes accessible from Glacier Paradise.
Zermatt is car-free, so the town relies on walking, electric vehicles, and efficient public transport to get around. If you’re exploring the area, walking is the best option. However, for a quicker ride, there are electric taxis and buses available.
Tip: A Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card offers unlimited travel on public transportation within Switzerland, including buses, trains, and cable cars. It’s especially useful if you plan on visiting multiple attractions or exploring other parts of Switzerland.
Whether you’re looking to ski, hike, or simply relax and enjoy the views, Glacier Paradise offers something for everyone. The Matterhorn’s towering presence, combined with the 360-degree views of the Alps and glaciers, makes this an unforgettable experience. If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland, Glacier Paradise is a must-see.
