Starting out as a new cyclist can feel both exciting and overwhelming.

Whether you're getting on a bike for the first time or returning after years, there's a lot to learn. We've all been beginners at some point, making mistakes and figuring things out along the way.

If only someone had given us these tips when we first started cycling! Well, Lykkers, today, we're here to make your journey smoother. From choosing the right bike to handling unexpected flat tires, these a few essential tips will help you get the best start on your cycling adventure.

1. Buy Your Bike from a Local Shop

A local bike shop is your best choice when buying a bike. Why? Because they will ensure the bike fits you perfectly, help with adjustments, and may even offer free maintenance for a certain period. Plus, if you run into issues, you have a reliable place to get expert advice.

If you're unsure what type of bike to get, here's a quick guide:

• A road bike is a great all-around choice for beginners.

• If you plan to ride on rough terrains like trails or gravel roads, a mountain bike or gravel bike is a better fit.

• If you find the low handlebars on road bikes uncomfortable, you might prefer a hybrid bike, but it's still good to start with a road bike.

• If you're thinking about racing in the future, aluminum road bikes like the Cannondale CAAD or Specialized Allez are solid options.

2. Adjust Your Bike for Maximum Comfort

Even experienced cyclists constantly tweak their bike setup to ride more comfortably and avoid injuries. One of the most important adjustments is saddle height.

A simple way to find the right saddle height is to place your heel on the pedal and rotate it to the lowest position—your leg should be straight. When you switch to riding with the ball of your foot, your knee should have a slight bend.

Also, keep your arms slightly bent while riding, and check your posture: if your front wheel's hub is hidden behind the handlebars in your line of sight, you've got the right position!

3. Learn How to Change a Tire

Every cyclist will eventually face a flat tire—it's just part of the experience. Picture this: you're miles away from home, with only a water bottle, a snack, and a spare inner tube, but no idea how to replace the tire. That's a situation no one wants to be in!

The best solution? Learn how to change a tire before you need to. Ask a friend, visit a local bike shop, or watch online tutorials. Then, practice at home until you can do it confidently.
